Every area of the world has great spiritual needs. The Savior commanded us to go into “all the world.” The gospel is for every people of every age.
God has burdened our heart and fixed our focus to the needs of the Northwest region of the United States. It is a huge area, as diverse in cultures as it is in landscape. This region of the US goes from vast fertile farmlands of the central plains, to the grandeur and beauty of the Rocky Mountains, to the deserts of Utah and Nevada and the scenic coast of the Pacific Northwest. This vast region is home to some of the larger cities of our nation. It also possesses many remote and rural populations. The diversities of culture range from large Asian, Russian and European populations of the Pacific Northwest, to the ranch and Native American influence of the West to the conservative heartland of America.
The religious influences of this region are equally diverse. The west coast is strongly influenced by world religions reflective of its population. It also reflects a spiritual apathy bred by the affluence of our culture. The mountain west has been predominantly influenced by Mormonism, while the Dakotas and central region would be predominantly Catholic and Protestant. The spiritual need is the same, though the cultures and religions are diverse. Planting churches in all of these places is the only Biblical remedy for the spiritual needs of this region of America.
It is imperative that individuals, churches and organizations operate by Biblical principle and not by pragmatic methods. The scriptural injunction is stated in I Corinthians 6:19-20.
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
This passage teaches us that every believer belongs to God and therefore has the divine calling to glorify God in everything. Paul stated it this way in Ephesians 5:10
“Proving what is acceptable to the Lord.”
The purpose of Northwest Baptist Missions is to assist local churches in carrying out the great commission. The Biblical means to accomplish this task is for obedient local churches to send out those separated by the Holy Spirit to evangelize the lost and establish a local church to equip the saints to repeat the process. NBM’s role is to “hold up the hands” of sending and supporting churches by aiding their missionaries in the work of church planting. We also seek to help new mission churches and existing churches that are struggling. Our goal is to see strong healthy churches in the Northwest who are able to carry on the work of church planting in their “Jerusalem.”
Northwest Baptist Missions is unique in the fact that God has placed us in the center of our field of ministry. We desire to partner with church planters and those called to help them.
The first goal is to help the church planter raise sufficient support to sustain him while God raises up His church. Through wise counsel and careful evaluation, we seek to help the church planter discern God’s will about where God would have them minister. Following deputation, those new to church planting spend a year serving in an established or mission church under the direction of an experienced church planter. This is a time for adapting to the area and developing a well organized and prayerful plan for ministry.
Often, the approach is to go into a community and hold several days of special evangelistic meetings after intensive door to door canvassing. There are times where we already have contacts and are able to build on them. Whatever the method, it must honor God and will not succeed without intense prayer and hard work. In time, by the will and grace of God, a local church is established. Hopefully the vision of this new church is to start the process all over again.
Would God have you be a part?
